Will Zimmerman stands up to the heads of the Sanctuary Network to defend Helen Magnus against a shocking murder charge. But as evidence mounts, even Will has trouble finding a way to defend her innocence. |
Cold open[]

INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY - DAY
[Will rounds corner obviously agitated with Declan who is following behind him.]
WILL:
Where is he?
DECLAN:
Just calm down.
WILL:
Don't tell me to calm down. I want to see him. Where is he?
WILL:
Come on.
[Will stops at the elevator and pushes the call button repeatedly. The doors open and they enter the elevator.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - ELEVATOR
WILL:
How the hell did this happen?
DECLAN:
We're still piecing it together. They found him last in an alley near the shipyards.
WILL:
And who found him?
DECLAN:
An anonymous tip; by the time they got there it was too late.
WILL:
And when did you get here?
DECLAN:
This morning; Henry called, I caught the next flight.
WILL:
Well, why the hell wouldn't anyone tell me as soon as...
DECLAN:
You were already on your way back. You wouldn't have done any good.
INT. - OLD CITY SANTUARY - LOWER LEVEL
[The elevator opens and Will rushes out. Will stops in front of a door and Declan moves in front and opens the door; holding it open for Will. Declan then moves to a row of cabinets and pulls one open. He pulls out a body covered by a sheet and pulls down the sheet to reveal Bigfoot.]
DECLAN:
I'm sorry.
[Will sniffs, crying.]
WILL:
Do we know who did this?
DECLAN:
I'm still looking into it.
WILL:
But you have some idea.
DECLAN:
We...we should talk when you're settled.
WILL:
Why? What's going on? Who did this?
DECLAN:
Look, it's too early to know for sure, but so far all the evidence I've gathered points to Helen Magnus.

Act I[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - MORGUE
[Declan replaces the sheet over Bigfoot, pushes the slab back into the cabinet and closes the door.]
WILL:
You're out of your mind.
DECLAN:
I didn't believe it either at first.
WILL:
At first?
DECLAN:
We ran ballistics on the bullets we pulled from the body; they came from Magnus' nine mil.
WILL:
So?
DECLAN:
And she had gunshot residue on her coat.
WILL:
All that proves is that she fired the gun at some point.
DECLAN:
And he contacted me.
WILL:
Who, the Big Guy?
DECLAN:
Two nights before he died; he was concerned about Magnus.
WILL:
Concerned? Concerned about what?
DECLAN:
He said she'd started to slip; mentally.
WILL:
I never saw any evidence of that.
DECLAN:
Yeah, well, she was hiding it.
WILL:
I'm a psychiatrist.
DECLAN:
Look, all I can tell you is what he told me. Apparently, it's a condition she's had for years. He found out about it recently, agreed to let it slide, but it got to a point where he thought he had to do something.
WILL:
This is...this is crazy. This is Magnus we're talking about.
DECLAN:
Why would he make something like that up? Will, just so you know...I have no choice but to invoke Article 9.
WILL:
Wait a second. Where is she?
DECLAN:
Level three isolation.
WILL:
What?!
[Angry, Will leaves the room.]
WILL:
She didn't do this!
DECLAN:
Then she has nothing to worry about!
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - LEVEL THREE ISOLATION
[Will enters a code and enters a room. Magnus is sitting in the corner of the room staring out the window but rises quickly when Will enters.]
MAGNUS:
Will...Oh, thank God.
[Magnus rushes to Will and embraces him in a hug. Will is off balance at Magnus's odd behavior. Will drops his arms from around her and Magnus pulls back. Magnus's eyes are red and puffy from crying.]
WILL:
Are you okay?
MAGNUS:
How could I be? They're telling me that I killed one of my dearest friends.
WILL:
What do you mean, telling you?
MAGNUS:
I don't remember what happened.
[Magnus walks away from him and sits down on a couch.]
MAGNUS:
Honestly, I have...I've absolutely no memory of the past week.
WILL:
Well, were you injured?
[Will moves to sit in a chair opposite Magnus.]
WILL:
Were you exposed to something?
MAGNUS:
No, physically I'm fine. The tox screen was negative. Someone did this to me. Someone deliberately erased my memories.
WILL:
How?
MAGNUS:
I don't know! Aren't you listening to me?
[Will stares at Magnus trying to make sense of her odd behavior.]
MAGNUS:
I'm sorry. I just...I'm just as confused as you are. Someone's trying to set me up. Someone's trying to make it look like I killed...
[Magnus starts crying.]
WILL:
All right, listen to me, listen to me. Okay? We're going to get to the bottom of this, I promise.
MAGNUS:
He was one of my oldest friends, Will. You have to help me. Please?
WILL:
Of course.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - CRYPT
[Sunlight pours in from the window over a wreath of flowers placed over a coffin. Henry is sitting on a step in front of the crypt, lost in thought. Kate slowly walks in.]
KATE:
Here you are. I've been looking all over for you. Is he, uh...
HENRY:
Yeah.
[Kate sits down next to Henry.]
HENRY:
We moved him over an hour ago. He always said he wanted to be laid to rest here, on the grounds.
KATE:
It looks nice. You did a good job. Will's back. He wants to see us.
HENRY:
You tell him to wait a bit.
KATE:
He says it's important; something about Article 9.
HENRY:
What?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - WILL'S OFFICE
[Kate and Henry are sitting in front of Will's desk.]
HENRY:
Declan doesn't actually believe she did it.
WILL:
Doesn't matter.
KATE:
What's Article 9?
WILL:
Ah, according to the Sanctuary charter, any time there's suspicion of wrongdoing, they refer the matter to the other heads of household for review. It's Magnus' rule.
HENRY:
What the hell are we going to do?
WILL:
Well, we can start by finding out who's really behind this. What do you guys know?
HENRY:
Uh, Big Guy came to me. He said he was going to Old City to meet someone.
KATE:
I went to Magnus' office before bed, but the door was closed.
WILL:
Come on...there's got to be somebody who knows something, some proof that she's innocent. [pause] All right, I'm going to check out the crime scene.
KATE:
I'll go with you.
HENRY:
I guess I should try to go through her files, see if there's anything to indicate who was after her.
WILL:
Yeah, that's a good idea. You're the only guy who can do this. No one else can crack her encryption codes.
[Kate squeezes Henry's shoulder as she rises. Will and Kate leave.]
HENRY:
Damn.
EXT. - OLD CITY - ALLEY - DAY
[Will is kneeling in an alley while Kate is looking around.]
WILL:
This is where they found his body. I should have been here.
KATE:
You think it would have helped?
WILL:
I don't know.
KATE:
Come on, let's look around. Get those freaky eyeballs of yours into action.
[Will begins snapping pictures of the alley.]
WILL:
Have you noticed Magnus acting strangely lately?
KATE:
You're asking me? I mean, she's a weirdo pretty much all the time.
WILL:
Declan said that the Big Guy told him that she was starting to slip.
KATE:
Like Amy Winehouse slip?
WILL:
I don't know if screaming at paparazzi is quite her speed. It's more like little things.
KATE:
Huh...
WILL:
What?
KATE:
It's probably nothing. Last week she sends me this email, asked me to pick up a new intake. I go to the address, but it wasn't there.
WILL:
The abnormal wasn't there?
KATE:
No, like, the whole building wasn't there. The address didn't exist.
WILL:
It must have been a mistake. Did you ask her about it?
KATE:
Yeah, she denied ever having sent the email. Then the next day, I get another email from her with the exact same request. It was weird.
[Will's attention is drawn to something up on the wall of the building.]
KATE:
And you're not listening to me anymore.
WILL:
What is that?
KATE:
I knew your freaky eyeballs would come up with something.
[Will snaps pictures of wires protruding out of the wall.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[Henry is working at his computer with Kate and Will looking over his shoulder.]
HENRY:
It's a surveillance camera. The cops set up hundreds of 'em all over the city.
WILL:
Well, this one was pointed directly at our crime scene.
HENRY:
No scheduled maintenance. There's no reason it should be gone.
WILL:
So it could have caught the whole thing.
HENRY:
Yeah, well, the footage gets uploaded to the main server. I might be able to hack in and retrieve it.
WILL:
Nice. That's the best news I've had all day.
KATE:
I'll put the word out to some of my contacts. Maybe somebody knows something.
HENRY:
Oh, hey, I managed to get into the Doc's computer. Felt like crap doing it,
WILL:
What'd you get?
HENRY:
I'm just getting started, but I did find these.
WILL:
Brain scans?
HENRY:
Yeah, going back six years; Doc's been scanning herself regularly. The most recent one is two weeks ago.
WILL:
Huh...
KATE:
What is it?
WILL:
Find that video.
HENRY:
All right.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - LIBRARY
[Declan is looking at the brain scans Henry found. Will is sitting on the arm of the couch across from Declan.]
DECLAN:
How did you get these?
WILL:
How do you think?
DECLAN:
Bloody hell.
WILL:
Don't tell me you're actually buying into this.
DECLAN:
What do you mean?
WILL:
These scans show a pattern of deterioration lasting years. You're telling me nobody; none of us would have noticed anything?
DECLAN:
Well, the Big Guy noticed. In fact, coming clean about it Is probably what got him killed.
WILL:
Just stop it. Stop it! Magnus didn't do this! She's been set up. Somebody must have planted these.
DECLAN:
Who? Who had access to her computer? Think about it, Will. Why'd she bring you onboard last year? She's never needed any help before. She was looking for someone to replace her.
WILL:
This is ridiculous.
DECLAN:
Look, if you can provide me with an alternate theory that works, I'm happy to listen. Until then, I got to proceed based on the evidence.
WILL:
And what does that mean?
DECLAN:
The other Sanctuary heads have charged me with gathering evidence against her.
WILL:
What is this, a witch-hunt?
DECLAN:
We want to get to the truth, just like you.
WILL:
After all she's done for you, huh?
DECLAN:
That's not all.
[Will has turned to leave but stops.]
DECLAN:
They've voted to send in a triad.
WILL:
A triad?
DECLAN:
A team of investigators uniquely qualified for situations like this.
WILL:
And what makes them so "uniquely qualified"?
DECLAN:
They're telepaths. They're going to get inside her mind.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - FOYER - FRONT DOOR - DAY
[Will opens the door to reveal a woman and two men awaiting entry. Henry and Declan are behind Will as he opens the door.]
Act II[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY - DAY
[Will is escorting the woman telepath.]
WILL:
You know, I got to admit, I feel kind of...
EMMA:
Invaded, compromised. It's a common reaction. People tend to feel nervous around our skill set.
WILL:
Skill set. That's an interesting way of putting it. Listen, can I get you...
EMMA:
No, we ate on the way here. I'm sorry, when we begin an investigation; it's really very hard not to read everybody's thoughts. You see, the first emotions we sense are often the most important.
WILL:
Okay, so, um, what am I thinking now?
EMMA:
That you don't even know my name, Emma Correia.
WILL:
It's nice to meet you. I just wish it could have been under more pleasant circumstances.
EMMA:
I've been an admirer of Dr. Magnus for years.
WILL:
Oh, really? When did you meet?
EMMA:
We never have. Her work saved me. I've never felt at home anywhere except the Sanctuary Network.
WILL:
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.
EMMA:
How's your investigation going?
WILL:
Shouldn't you know already?
EMMA:
Actually no, it's not an exact science, Will. The mind is tricky, and to read it takes focus, concentration, proximity, you know, and even then, a person's thoughts aren't always out there in the open. That's why there's three of us.
WILL:
Doesn't it get noisy with all the, you know...
[They stop in front of the elevator.]
EMMA:
Luckily, we can shield our thoughts from each other. It helps us to remain objective.
WILL:
Huh...Well, just...I wish I could get Magnus to remember what happened.
EMMA:
We'll be questioning her later on this afternoon. You're welcome to sit in.
WILL:
Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that.
[The door to the elevator opens and Will holds the elevator and stares at Emma.]
EMMA:
I'm... flattered, Will.
WILL:
This is going to be tough.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[Will enters and walks in and goes straight to Henry who is sitting at his computer.]
WILL:
Is this going to upset me?
HENRY:
Oh, yeah, it's bad news. You know that video you wanted me to look at?
WILL:
Yeah.
HENRY:
It's been deleted from the police database.
WILL:
So someone on the police force is gunning for Magnus?
HENRY:
Well, that's what I thought, too, so I did some digging. It turns out The chief deleted it himself.
WILL:
The chief? Well, why would he do that? He and Magnus are old friends.
HENRY:
Exactly, so...I hacked into his email account.
WILL:
Oh, boy.
HENRY:
Don't worry, it's completely untraceable, but look what I found.
HENRY:
That is an email requesting the file be deleted.
WILL:
From Magnus. What?
EXT. - OLD CITY - UNDER ELEVATED RAILWAY - DAY
[A man is waiting for Kate and she walks up to talk to him.]
KATE:
Okay, Remy. You got your money. Now, what have you heard?
REMY:
Your boss has been very busy lately.
KATE:
Meaning?
REMY:
I tracked down this dealer, and he said that she bought a whack of red-list freaks last week.
KATE:
Red-list? Are you sure?
REMY:
Oh, yeah. According to him, she was all over the weird, creepy stuff. Stuff nobody else wants.
KATE:
What exactly did she buy?
REMY:
Wouldn't tell me; didn't want to rat out a client. But whatever it was, she paid a lot for it. Way over market.
KATE:
That doesn't make any sense. What would Magnus want with a bunch of red-listers?
REMY:
Nothing legal.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - LIBRARY
[Magnus is sitting in chair facing the three telepaths. Declan is behind her on one side and Will is sitting in a chair beside Magnus.]
EMMA:
Shall we begin? I'm going to ask you to open your mind and allow us inside. Do you know why we're here?
MAGNUS:
You're the triad, Emma. You're here to interrogate me.
EMMA:
We don't want you to think of it that way. This is an important matter, but you are still innocent until proven otherwise. Now, three nights ago, there was an incident in Old City. Do you remember it?
MAGNUS:
No.
EMMA:
One of your oldest friends was killed.
MAGNUS:
I don't remember.
EMMA:
Do you remember going into the alley and firing your weapon?
MAGNUS:
I can't...I don't know what happened.
TOSEN:
What is your relationship like with your staff?
[Magnus appears alarmed at the question.]
MAGNUS:
I didn't do this.
TOSEN:
Please, just answer the questions.
[Magnus has become agitated.]
MAGNUS:
Why are you treating me like a common criminal?
EMMA:
This investigation is in accordance with your charter...
MAGNUS:
Someone did this to me, and you're all just sitting here instead of trying to find them! You're all in on this, aren't you? You've done something to me.
WILL:
Magnus...
MAGNUS:
No! No, leave me alone, all of you!
[Magnus gets up out of the chair and stands away from everyone.]
MAGNUS:
Get out of my house!
WILL:
Okay, this is over. We can reconvene later.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY
[Will and Emma are talking; lagging behind as everyone walks down the hallway.]
EMMA:
Her mind is chaotic, damaged. I've seen this type of thing before. Symptoms of advanced dementia, it makes it impossible to read her thoughts, even with basic prompts to focus them.
[Will stops and faces Emma.]
WILL:
W... what does that mean?
EMMA:
Telepathy is our most reliable means of investigation, but it's not the only one. We'll need to look over the existing physical evidence until we can understand why we can't read her mind. Will, I'm... I'm sorry. I know you were hoping for better news.
[Will walks away upset.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
WILL:
Hey, you wanted to see me?
HENRY:
Yeah. Firewall intercepted an outgoing email.
[Henry hands Will the email.]
WILL:
No way.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS'S OFFICE
WILL:
What the hell are you trying to pull?
DECLAN:
Sorry?
WILL:
You sent an email to the heads of household requesting to be put in charge of this Sanctuary.
DECLAN:
You read my email?
WILL:
You're trying to discredit Magnus before the triad renders judgment because you want her job.
DECLAN:
Watch yourself, mate, you're out of line.
WILL:
I'm out of line? You're making an end run around her, but I'm the one who's out of line?
DECLAN:
You realize what'll happen if she's found guilty? There's a list of candidates a mile long to take her place and let me tell you, none of them will be as pleasant to work for as me. For starters, they'll fire the whole staff, you included. And a year from now, if her memory clears up and she's found not guilty, I'm more than happy to step down, let her take command again. That's more than I can say for anyone else. You have no idea of the political landscape you're dealing with.
WILL:
I want a copy of all the evidence you've collected so far.
DECLAN:
Oh, you think I'm fabricating this, do you?
WILL:
Yeah.
[Will's cell phone rings.]
WILL:
Hello?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
HENRY:
Hey, it's me. I got the video from the alley. It's downloading now.
WILL:
(on phone) Good, we'll be right there.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[Will and Declan are standing behind Henry looking at his computer monitor.]
HENRY:
Turns out the police maintain a backup database. It's only updated every three days, so there's some lag time between the main system and...
WILL:
Yeah, yeah, I... I get it. So, what do you got?
[They watch the video on the monitor which shows the empty alley.]
WILL:
Can you fast forward a bit? Right there.
[Bigfoot enters the alley.]
DECLAN:
It looks like he's waiting for someone.
WILL:
Oh. There.
[A person wearing a cloak is standing with their back to the camera.]
WILL:
Damn it, who is that?
[The person shoots Bigfoot and then kneels down beside him. They stand again still with their back to the camera.]
WILL:
Aw, come on, turnaround.
[The person turns toward the camera. Magnus looks up at the camera and Henry freezes the video.]
Act III[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - WILL'S OFFICE
[Will is sitting at his desk idly playing with a baseball in his hand.]
WILL:
Come in.
[Scofield enters.]
WILL:
Scofield, have a seat.
SCOFIELD:
It's not necessary. I just wanted to inform you, my colleagues and I have gone through the evidence, discussed the issue at length.
WILL:
Let me guess.
SCOFIELD:
Dr. Magnus has a mental deficiency. She needs treatment. She's a hazard to herself and others.
WILL:
She's being set up.
SCOFIELD:
How can you still believe that? You've seen the video.
WILL:
I don't care about the video. I don't care what anyone says, telepathic or otherwise.
SCOFIELD:
I see you may not agree with our methods, Dr. Zimmerman, but I can assure you they're effective, and there's a good reason Dr. Magnus assigned this task to our kind.
WILL:
So what happens now?
SCOFIELD:
In the interim, Declan MacRae will be assuming responsibilities of this Sanctuary. I know that you believe he's somehow connected to Magnus' crime, but I can assure you that's not true. I have questioned him fully and read his mind.
WILL:
Yeah, well...a lot of good that did Magnus.
SCOFIELD:
You know, I'm sorry that you're disappointed, doctor, but really, it's for the best. Now, Dr. Magnus will be transported first thing in the morning. I suggest you take the opportunity to say goodbye before then.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - ISOLATION 3
[Magnus is agitated and pacing the room.]
MAGNUS:
You can't let them do this to me.
WILL:
We're doing everything we can to get you out of here. Henry is pulling out all the stops. Kate is talking to...
MAGNUS:
No, you don't understand. They're all out to get me!
WILL:
Who?
MAGNUS:
Declan, and that other one, what's his name, Scofield? They're working together.
WILL:
How do you know?
MAGNUS:
Isn't it obvious? Will, they're trying to kill me! Look.
[Magnus picks up a tray of food and gives it to Will.]
MAGNUS:
Look at this. It's poisoned. Smell it.
[Will stares down at tray.]
MAGNUS:
Smell it! They're going to destroy everything. Ashley told me.
WILL:
Magnus, this has nothing to do with Ashley.
[Will sets tray on end table.]
MAGNUS:
They killed her too! They killed my daughter!
WILL:
Okay, listen to me. You're exhausted. You need to rest.
MAGNUS:
Don't patronize me. You said you were going to help me.
WILL:
I am trying to help you.
MAGNUS:
Oh, no.
WILL:
What?
MAGNUS:
Oh, no...they got to you too.
WILL:
No, look, I swear, I am fighting for you.
MAGNUS:
You're lying! Why is everyone lying to me?
[Magnus walks to corner of room and Will, feeling dejected, looks down and then keys the code to leave. Magnus elbows him to the back of his head, knocking him down and opens the door and leaves.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY
[Magnus nears the elevator and the doors open and Tosen exits.]
TOSEN:
Dr. Magnus?
[Magnus grabs Tosen and puts him in a choke hold. He passes out and Magnus gets in elevator.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - ISOLATION 3
[Will attempts to get up. Declan enters and finds Will.]
DECLAN:
Zimmerman!
DECLAN:
(on walkie) Henry, I need an immediate perimeter lockdown.
HENRY:
Uh, yeah, you're too late.
[Henry is watching the video of Magnus opening a door.]
HENRY:
She's already gone.
[Magnus exits; closing the door behind her.]
DECLAN:
(on walkie) Fisher, take Collins and go after her.
DECLAN:
What the hell were you doing here, anyway?
WILL:
We were just talking.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
WILL:
Where are you on Magnus' files?
HENRY:
Still scratching the surface, why?
WILL:
There's something in there that Declan wants. I mean, think about it. He knew exactly what he had to do to discredit Magnus, and now that she's out of the picture, he can take his time, go through the files one by one.
HENRY:
Yeah, but wouldn't the telepaths know what he was up to?
WILL:
Not if one of them's in on it.
HENRY:
Aw, you think?
WILL:
One of them could be blocking the other two from reading his mind.
HENRY:
Telepathic criminal, great.
WILL:
I know.
[Will's cell phone rings. He looks at display before answering it.]
WILL:
Hey.
KATE:
Hey, meet me at the pier in twenty.
[A dial tone is heard.]
WILL:
Hello?
EXT. - OLD CITY - PIER
[Kate is leading Will down a stairwell leading from the outside of a building.]
KATE:
I had to get you out of the range of the telepaths before I brought you here.
WILL:
What is this place?
KATE:
Storage facility, part of the university before they shut it down. My guy swears he spotted her coming in.
WILL:
Magnus?
KATE:
Doc? Are you down here?
WILL:
Magnus, it's Will and Kate.
[Magnus swings a board at Will and Kate.]
MAGNUS:
Ahhh.. Ah...
WILL:
Hold on a second!
MAGNUS:
Leave me alone! Stay back!
WILL:
We don't want to hurt you. We're here to help you. Come on, Magnus. Now, you already knocked me out once today. One per day, that's your limit.
MAGNUS:
Will?
[Magnus drops the board and turns away distressed.]
MAGNUS:
What's happening to me?
WILL:
Magnus, let me help you.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[Henry is working on his computer.]
HENRY:
No, that can't be right.
[Henry looks puzzled at the monitor.]
HENRY:
What the..? Oh, yeah? Try this one on for size.
[Henry taps keys.]
HENRY:
Oh, come on.
[An encrypted file appears.]
HENRY:
Oh, man.
INT. - OLD CITY - STORAGE FACILITY
WILL:
We're not leaving her here.
KATE:
Well, you can't take her back there.
[Will's cell phone rings.]
WILL:
Henry, what's going on?
HENRY:
(on phone) Hey, I kind of hit the mother lode here. Where are you?
WILL:
I'll be right there...
[Kate grabs Will's arm.]
WILL:
What?
KATE:
Hello, Mcfly? You can't go back there. The Amazing Kreskins will read your mind and find out where Magnus is.
HENRY:
(on phone) What's going on? H... hello?
WILL:
Henry, can you meet me at Dead Bridge?
HENRY:
(on phone) Yeah, why?
WILL:
I can't tell you.
HENRY:
(on phone) Okay, I have no idea what that means.
WILL:
Good. Okay.
KATE:
Smooth.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
HENRY:
H... hello? Bye.
[Henry waits impatiently for file to download.]
HENRY:
Come on, come on, come on, come on.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - LIBRARY
[Declan watches as Henry runs down hallway.]
EXT OLD CITY DEAD BRIDGE
[Henry and Will are sitting in van talking.]
HENRY:
So I was going through her backup drive when I stumbled across a ghost directory labeled "Big Bertha". I tried to open it, and I found this.
WILL:
What is this?
HENRY:
Some sort of encryption cipher. Csis-level coding, so whatever's in there's got to be important.
WILL:
And you think this is what Declan's after?
HENRY:
I'd say it's a fair bet.
WILL:
Big Bertha? Does that mean anything to you?
HENRY:
No.
WILL:
All right, stay on it. Let me know what you find out.
HENRY:
Yeah. You got it.
INT. - OLD CITY - STORAGE FACILITY
[Will returns to find Kate sitting on stairs and Magnus still pacing.]
KATE:
How did it go?
WILL:
Good. Henry thinks he's found something, so...
[Declan and his men rush in the door with weapons drawn.]
DECLAN:
Magnus!
[Kate pulls out her gun.]
DECLAN:
Put it down, Miss Freelander. Right now!
MAGNUS:
You brought them here?
WILL:
No. No, it wasn't me.
DECLAN:
Actually, it was.
WILL:
What the hell is this?
DECLAN:
I could very well ask you the same question. Dr. Magnus, you are hereby remanded into custody. You'll come quietly, please.
MAGNUS:
No. No! No!
[Declan's men try to grab Magnus's arms but she pulls away and runs stumbling into boarded enclosure. The men grab her again.]
MAGNUS:
No! Get your hands off me! Let go of me!
WILL:
Hey, take it easy!
MAGNUS:
Let go of me!
DECLAN:
She's becoming more dangerous. It's time to take extreme measures. Confine her in the SHU; maximum security.
Act IV[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - LIBRARY
[Will, Declan and the telepaths are all gathered.]
DECLAN:
You made a very big mistake, mate. We're not the enemy. What do you know about Big Bertha?
[Will turns to look at Declan but doesn't answer him.]
SCOFIELD:
Your silence won't help you, Dr. Zimmerman. You can't control your thoughts.
EMMA:
Stop it, Scofield. You know as well as I do he knows nothing. Will, I can assure you there is no conspiracy here.
WILL:
How do you know? You said yourself you can't read each other's thoughts, so-
SCOFIELD:
We can read his, Dr. Zimmerman.
TOSEN:
And yours; harboring a fugitive is a serious crime under the Sanctuary charter, Doctor.
WILL:
So you want to lock me up, too? Go ahead.
[Will leaves the library and Emma follows him out.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY
EMMA:
Will, wait. Look, I want to apologize for the way Scofield treated you. You didn't deserve that. The emergence of information on Big Bertha has everybody rattled.
WILL:
What the hell is Big Bertha anyway?
[Emma looks at Will uncertain and then looks at floor.]
WILL:
Oh...I get it. So you get to know all my inner thoughts, but when it comes to telling me why I'm being treated like a criminal, then everything's off limits, huh?
EMMA:
Look, all right...but what I'm about to tell you is heavily classified. Only a handful of people in the world know it.
WILL:
Fine.
EMMA:
As you know, we house many species of deadly abnormals within the Network. Normally, this isn't a problem, provided certain precautions are taken. However, there are certain abnormals that are so dangerous; we simply can't risk keeping them around.
WILL:
How dangerous?
EMMA:
Earthquakes, mass flooding, fires, atmospheric toxins, and believe me, the list of what these abnormals are capable of goes on. Big Bertha was one such abnormal. She could alter the magnetic resonance in her body to manipulate tectonic plates. The destruction she caused was unimaginable. Dr. Magnus tracked, captured, and euthanized her according to protocol, or so everybody thought, and now these files indicate that Big Bertha may still actually be alive. I'm sure you can understand how unsafe that is. Whoever controls her has the power to ransom governments, level entire cities...
WILL:
Let me explain something to you. I know Magnus. I work with her every day. There's no way that she would ever unleash something like this.
EMMA:
There was a time when I would have believed you without question, Will, but now I'm not so sure.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[Will, Declan and the telepaths are gathered around Henry and his computer.]
DECLAN:
I thought you said you had it.
HENRY:
Yeah, I did, I just...It's a lot different with you guys standing over me like this. There. There's your Big Bertha file.
EMMA:
Oh, my God. She's alive.
DECLAN:
Not only that, Magnus is moving her.
WILL:
Where?
DECLAN:
It just says she's in a container on the Arabian Sea. Look at the latest AIS data.
TOSEN:
What is she thinking?
SCOFIELD:
We need to mobilize the nearest Sanctuary retrieval team immediately. If Big Bertha falls into the wrong hands, it'll be disastrous.
DECLAN:
I'll make the arrangements.
SCOFIELD:
Still think she's innocent?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - WILL'S OFFICE
[Will is packing up his office.]
EMMA:
I understand that you're leaving. May I ask why?
WILL:
Don't you know already?
EMMA:
You feel that remaining here will put constraints on your ability to exonerate Dr. Magnus. Will, I admire your loyalty, but there comes a time when you have to put your emotions aside and face the logic of the situation.
WILL:
You think it's logical...that she would shoot her lifelong friend in cold blood, that she would lie for years about harboring a deadly abnormal, and then send it on a pleasure cruise across the East African coast? You think that's logical?
EMMA:
She's sick, Will. She's not herself.
WILL:
Right, I forgot; the mysterious degenerative brain disease.
EMMA:
Look, I know you're hurting. I feel the same way.
WILL:
Then why are you leaving?
EMMA:
Well, because our work is done. The evidence speaks for itself, and...
WILL:
Sure.
EMMA:
At least we found Big Bertha before something terrible happened.
[Will returns to packing his books.]
EMMA:
Well, goodbye, Will. I'm sorry that we ended up on the opposite sides of this.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - SHU
[Will enters the observation room and looks in on Magnus. She is restrained to a bed and on monitors and appears to be unconscious.]
WILL:
Magnus...I don't know if you can hear me...or if you even care anymore...I just came to say goodbye. I'm sorry this happened. And I'm sorry I let you down, but I want you to know that I'm going to keep searching for the truth as long as I can. I just...I can't do it from here anymore.
[Magnus starts to convulse.]
[Will rushes to help her.]
WILL:
I need help down here!
Act V[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - INFIRMARY
[Declan is standing over Magnus who is on a bed. Will, Kate, and Henry are on the opposite side of the bed.]
DECLAN:
We put her in a drug-induced coma to stop the seizures. I'm afraid her condition is accelerating. It doesn't look good. I'm sorry.
[Declan walks around bed to stand before them.]
DECLAN:
Now, there's more bad news. We just got word from our retrieval team. The ship we were tracking was attacked by mercenaries. By the time we boarded it, the cargo had been stolen. Big Bertha's gone.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - CRYPT
[Will is leaning against crypt.]
WILL:
None of this makes any sense.
[Will notices the flowers on the floor and pushes the crypt open. No body is inside. Will flashes back]
DECLAN:
They've voted to send in a triad.
EMMA:
When we're beginning an investigation it's really very hard not to read everyone's thoughts.
HENRY:
Telepathic criminal, great.
EMPATH 3:
If Big Bertha falls into the wrong hands, it'll be disastrous.
DECLAN:
So far, all the evidence I've gathered points to Helen Magnus.
[Will returns to the present.]
WILL:
Oh, my God.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - INFIRMARY
[Henry is sitting next to an unconscious Magnus as Will rushes in.]
WILL:
Where's the triad?
HENRY:
They left hours ago, why?
WILL:
All right, we've got to run a scan on Magnus' brain right now. Big Guy's not dead.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
[The team is looking at the new brain scans.]
HENRY:
This can't be right. Where's the deterioration?
WILL:
It never existed. Those other brain scans weren't real.
KATE:
Then why did she flake out?
WILL:
I don't know, but I'm guessing she did it on purpose to conceal her thoughts from the triad. Okay, so you're Magnus, and you want to create these symptoms what do you do?
HENRY:
I don't follow you.
WILL:
Is there a type of abnormal that would cause her to act this way?
KATE:
Ozone beetle.
HENRY:
What, are you crazy?
KATE:
Right there on the scan, the dark spot.
WILL:
What's an ozone beetle?
HENRY:
It's a bug that crawls into your brain and nests in your hippocampus, but they're...
KATE:
Red-listed.
WILL:
The dealer she met last week. What does it do?
KATE:
It secretes this fluid that gives you this wicked high, but if you leave it in there too long...
HENRY:
It causes memory loss, paranoia, increased sensitivity to light.
KATE:
Which is why she hid in the basement.
WILL:
Okay, we've got to get it out of her.
HENRY:
All right, I'll go get a room ready.
KATE:
Why would she do this?
WILL:
Do you still have that email that she sent you last week?
KATE:
Yeah, I think so.
[Kate moves to the computer.]
KATE:
There.
WILL:
Right there; she spelled "retrieve" wrong.
KATE:
So?
WILL:
No, Magnus is a spelling Nazi. She'd never do that.
KATE:
Five minutes ago I would have thought she'd never put a bug in her head, either.
[After Will clicks on the spelling error a map appears on the screen showing tracking.]
KATE:
Whoa...What the hell is that?
WILL:
Africa. I think we just found Big Bertha.
EXT. - EAST AFRICA - PORT OF DJIBOUTI - DAY
[A cargo container is being lowered to the dock. Emma is walking with some men.]
MAN 1:
We took the ship yesterday. They gave up the cargo with no resistance.
EMMA:
Good. We'll need to move it again to our more secure location before the Sanctuary picks up the trail.
MAN 1:
There is a truck standing by.
MAN 1:
(on walkie) Ouvrez-le, vite, vite!
EMMA:
Some things are simply too powerful to be left in the wrong hands.
[The container is opened and but only a small device is inside. Man 1 goes and picks up device.]
MAN 1:
It's a tracking device.
[He brings the device back to Emma. Suddenly Declan appears with Will and Kate and some men.]
DECLAN:
Freeze! Hold it! Don't move!
DECLAN'S MEN:
Move it! Come on, let's go.
[Will walks to Emma.]
WILL:
Can you read my mind now?
EMMA:
Big Bertha's dead.
WILL:
I'm sorry we ended up on opposite sides of this.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - INFIRMARY
[A recovering Magnus is sitting up looking much better.]
WILL:
Okay, so let me get this straight. You knew Emma was bad news from day one?
MAGNUS:
Day one might be pushing it, but over the past few years, I'd noticed a series of information leaks that couldn't be traced back to the Cabal.
WILL:
So you came up with this insane plan to dangle Big Bertha in front of her. Drop an ozone beetle to take yourself out of the picture. Kill the Big Guy, which I'm still not entirely sure about, by the way.
KATE:
And not tell any of us, so that we couldn't blow your cover.
MAGNUS:
Quite simple really.
KATE:
Oh, yeah.
WILL:
Yeah, yeah, it's totally simple.
KATE:
Okay, so spill. What is the gag on the Big Guy?
MAGNUS:
The subcutaneous facial layer of his species is four times thicker than that of humans.
WILL:
The bullets didn't penetrate.
KATE:
But Henry examined him. I mean, he was dead.
MAGNUS:
In a manner of speaking; I tipped the bullets with the secretion of a Chilean shepherd frog. It slowed his heart enough to feign death.
WILL:
Oh, my God, oh, my God, you're crazy. You're certifiably crazy. I should have let them take you away.
MAGNUS:
Nonsense, I knew you'd figure it out. Besides, I'd left careful instructions to call the whole thing off in two days' time if things went badly.
WILL:
The Big Guy.
KATE:
Huh...
WILL:
Speaking of which, shouldn't he be back by now?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - ELEVATOR
[Henry exits the elevator.]
BIGFOOT:
Henry.
[Henry smacks Bigfoot upside the head.]
HENRY:
If you ever do that to me again, I will shoot you myself, you got it?
BIGFOOT:
Got it.
HENRY:
All right, what are you standing there for? Let's go eat lunch.
[The two get back on the elevator and before the doors close we see Bigfoot smack Henry's head.]
