"Sanctuary for None, Part I" is the twelfth episode of the fourth season of Sanctuary, and the fifty-eighth episode overall in the series.

This episode is the first part of the two-part season Four finale.

Synopsis[]

A final confrontation looms as the Old City Sanctuary team races to prevent another all out conflict between humans and abnormals.

Plot[]

Cold Open[]

Richard Feliz arrives at the Old City Sanctuary to tell Helen Magnus that he wants to quit as her banker. He tries to convince her that he is unable to perform the duties she wants him to in order to achieve her great goal. She understands, but asks him to do her one last favor: to execute "Maneuver Delta Epsilon", a complete shutdown of Wall Street.

In the streets of the city, Will Zimmerman comes to the aid of a Hollow Earth abnormal named Jebal who is attacked by a human gang. He is overwhelmed, but a man comes to his help with a group of abnormals. He introduces himself as Caleb, and Will identifies him as the most wanted abnormal in the world. He tells Will to inform Magnus that she has a new friend in town.

Act I[]

Magnus is surprised to find Nikola Tesla in her study, and learns that he has been fired by the SCIU for stealing government money.

She then goes to see Will, who tells her about Caleb apparently spreading peace among the abnormal insurgency.

Magnus meets with Caleb, who tells her the Hollow Earth abnormals acted in self-defense, but that the conflict with the surface-dwelling humans is no solution. She asks him what she can do, and learns that he wants to create a settlement for abnormals in Old City's Fifth Ward.

When Magnus returns to the Sanctuary, Will is surprised to hear that she wants to help with the project.

Act II[]

Later, Magnus video calls Greg Addison, who tells her that Caleb is a dangerous terrorist and she has to tell him if she knows the abnormal's whereabouts. Magnus eventually hangs up on him, which Will considers not a smart move. Magnus tells him she wants to move on with the homeland project and will recall Kate Freelander to the surface to help them.

Henry Foss finds Tesla in his lab, still in a bad move over SCIU taking away his "stuff". He tries to cheer the vampire up, but isn't even listened to.

Magnus and Caleb make preparations to buy land in the Fifth Ward.

Magnus takes Captain Franklin, local head of the Old City Police Department, to a hideout where they meet with a number of abnormals and discuss the possibility of a peaceful coexistence.

Soon after, Will is ambushed by Addison and a SCIU squad. He tells him that he has reactivated him as an FBI agent.

Act III[]

Will angrily packs his things from his office in the Sanctuary, but soon learns that Magnus anticipated for the eventuality of him being reactivated as an FBI agent. While Will wants to run away from SCIU, Magnus asks him to stay and work for them; to have an inside person at SCIU.

Abby Corrigan guides Will to his desk at SCIU task force headquarters.

During a mission briefing by Addison, Will is uncooperative and resistant to the approach SCIU takes with abnormal cases.

Magnus and Caleb break a number of Hollow Earth abnormal prisoners out of a local SCIU detention facility.

Magnus's action causes a disturbance at SCIU headquarters, causing Addison to order Will to arrest her as his first assignment.

Act IV[]

Some time later, Will tries to get into the Sanctuary, but Henry tells him that his code has been retired on Magnus' orders.

Will and Abby try to figure out why Magnus acts the way she does.

The work on the homeland project continues. Kate has returned to the surface.

Will meets with Captain Franklin, whom he worked with back in his time at the Old City Police Department. He tells her that he has been made head of a task force, making him her nominal superior, and orders her to help him bring in Magnus.

Meanwhile, Henry is angry to learn that Bigfoot considers leaving the Sanctuary to live with the homeland project.

Act V[]

Will tells Addison he will bring in Magnus soon and get the answers they want. After that, he will be done with the FBI and SCIU and it all.

Kate meets Caleb, who notices her herusan promise band and tells her that her lover will be able to join them on the surface soon. As he moves along, Bigfoot appears. He asks her if she will return to Hollow Earth, but she says she might stay on the surface with Garris. Bigfoot acts distraught, and tells her to go back to Hollow Earth, as she does not belong here.

Meanwhile, Will and Captain Franklin ambush Magnus, but she gets away in her car. Will goes after her on his motorcycle while Franklin calls for backup. A car chase ensues, but ends when Magnus's escape route gets blocked by a reversing box truck. Will tells her she is under arrest.

Act VI[]

Magnus kicks Will over the hood of a parked car and gets away on his motorcycle just as Abby and the backup arrive.

Back at the SCIU building, Addison tells Will that he will handle the situation personally now.

Meanwhile, Magnus tells Caleb that they might have to redirect the overflow of abnormal refugees to other Sanctuaries, but he refuses to turn anyone away. Magnus then notices Bigfoot, and they have a talk. He tells her that this is his home now, and Magnus accepts his decision.

Addison finishes a phone call, and tells Will that bringing all the abnormals together in one place was exactly what SCIU wanted in the first place; they soon seal the abnormals in the Fifth Ward with a massive military presence. A cover story is put into place, informing the population about an apparent toxic spill in the area of the homeland project. However, just as Addison explains to Will how this has always been a police state in reality, Magnus appears on TV with a reporter. She has news for the world:

"I realize that what I am about to say may sound strange, or even frightening, but I assure you every word is true. It's time the world knew the truth. This district is full of strange beings, who have lived among us for hundreds of years. I call them abnormals. You know them as monsters. And they very much exist."

Notes[]

  • Factual Error: At the beginning of the episode, Helen Magnus opens the door and invites in Richard Feliz. Feliz wants to quit as Magnus's banker. As a last request from Magnus, she has Feliz execute Maneuver Delta Epsilon; a twelve minute shutdown of Wall Street. Later, in the next Episode 4x13 - "Sanctuary for None, Part II", it is explained by Will Zimmerman that Magnus had Feliz shutdown Wall Street to liquidate all of her assets without anyone knowing. This is not realistically possible on two counts. "Shutting down" Wall Street is equivalent to the work week closing of Wall Street every Monday-Friday at 4:00 PM EST; All trade in the NYSE is suspended at that moment until it is reopened the following work day at 9:30 AM EST.[1] 1) Not only would no trade be possible to occur to allow Feliz to liquidate (sell) Magnus's entire portfolio, but 2) even if it were possible, once the market resumed after a 'pause' the changes in the numbers of the select stocks that were sold would be highly noticeable to everyone paying attention to the market, especially to auditors. It would be a big red flag where many people would ask why certain stocks were sold during a time that no one else had access to buy or sell.
  • Casting: In the DVD/Blu-ray audio commentary for the episode, it is revealed that Dan Pelchat plays Jebal. Dan is Ryan Robbins (Henry Foss) stunt double. Ryan calls him "Spider Dan".
  • Casting: Rob Hayter and Clint Carleton play extras part of Caleb's men.
  • Reference / Anachronism : A despondent Nikola Tesla speaks of abandonment saying, "Even the pigeons left me in New York, 1943. The white dove." In the real world, for the last couple decades of his life, Tesla spent a lot of time feeding and caring for city pigeons. He did this until his death in NY in 1943. But the love of his life, the white pigeon with grey on her wingtips, died in his arms in 1922.[2]
  • Reshoot: After Helen Magnus meets with Caleb, she returns to the Old City Sanctuary, sitting at her desk in her study. She is joined shortly by Will Zimmerman walking in a few seconds later. When he askes how the meeting went, she tells Will that the Sanctuary will help Caleb make a homeland for Hollow Earth abnormals. This scene was noticeably filmed at least twice based on character clothing continuity.

Will Zimmerman

In one the photos however, Will Zimmerman is seen in the same scene without his jacket, wearing just his light blue t-shirt.
  • Stunts: Stunt driving was performed by Ashlea Earl (Helen Magnus) and Duane Dickinson (Will Zimmerman).
  • Revealing Mistake: At the end of the car chase scene, a box truck backs out into the road Helen Magnus is on, forcing her to slam on the brakes. Skid marks are visible on the road from a previous attempt (potentially a practice run), making what viewers see at least the second attempt the stunt was performed.
  • Trivia: The alphanumeric of the license plate on Helen Magnus's 2005-2010 Chrysler 300 LX [3] is: LPN 335.
  • Trivia: The alphanumeric of the license plate on Will Zimmerman's 2009 Suzuki GSX-R 600 [4] is: KAH 040.
  • Trivia: The alphanumeric of the license plate on the lead SCIU 2007 GMC Yukon XL [5] is: NTK 628.
  • Revealing Mistake: After Helen Magnus hops on Will Zimmerman's motorcycle, two black SCIU SUVs race around a corner towards them. As Magnus drives off, splitting the two vehicles, the vehicles stop and Abby Corrigan gets out of the passenger side of the lead SUV. At some point during production before or during filming this scene, the hood release lever of this vehicle was intentionally pulled for some unknown reason, as the hood of this vehicle is noticeably popped up from its secured latched position.
