Sanctuary for Kids (also stylized as S4K) was a nonprofit charity organization. It was a unified place where fans of Sanctuary and Amanda Tapping could donate money; these funds would be collected then dispersed to other charities.

History[]

The organization was launched on November 4th, 2009 (during the original air dates of season 2 of Sanctuary).[1] It was founded by Jill Bodie, her husband Damian Kindler, and Amanda Tapping. The director of the charity was Sylvia Patterson.

The goal of the charity was to help at-risk youth (children and teens) in need around the globe.[2] Two of the known primary organizations the charity directed funds towards were Nepal Orphans Home and the Watari [3] programs aiding local homeless youth in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Funds for the charity were sourced through donations given by fans and friends that were gathered from events and fundraising activities, such as auctions held online as well as in person before, during, and after interview panels. Auctions would usually include prop items from Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuary. 100% of funds raised for S4K were delivered directly towards their selected nonprofits.

After nine years of service, the charity was closed down at the end of 2018 in December.[4]

Who We Are[]

SANCTUARY FOR KIDS TEAM

Back in 2008 we, Amanda, Damian and Jill, set out to form a charitable organization that helped children in crisis around the world. After a year of researching different not-for-profits and meeting with business leaders we created Sanctuary for Kids, a not-for-profit organization that would give a marketing voice to small but amazing organizations.

Sanctuary for Kids was launched in November of 2009 and as of December 2015 has raised over $800,000. The bulk of this money has been used to educate more than 160 children in Nepal, and Haiti. We contribute to the feeding and housing of these children and provide important extra support to homeless teens in Canada. In addition, 20% of our funds have been donated to crisis funding around the world. The money has been raised through many events, including personal initiatives by supporters, summer and winter campaigns, on-line auctions, booth-sales at conventions and a major recurring fundraising event hosted and organized by GABIT in the UK and their incredible team. In addition, the regular monthly donations by generous supporters provide the backbone for the funds.
AMANDA TAPPING, Director
Amanda provides the voice and face to our organization, speaking at engagements and fundraisers internationally. She is driven by her passion for children and motivated by her tremendously generous fan base. Her career spans over 20 years and as an actor she has starred in several hit series including Stargate SG-1 and Sanctuary, which she co-produced. She is also highly regarded for her work as a director for film and television. Amanda lives in Vancouver with her husband and daughter.
DAMIAN KINDLER, Director
Damian is a founding member and visionary who still sits on the foundation’s board of directors. He has been writing and producing television for more than 20 years. He created Sanctuary and was a writer/executive producer on Fox Tv’s Sleepy Hollow, and is currently developing Kryton for Syfy. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Jill, and their two daughters.
JILL BODIE, Director
Jill maintains close relations with our charities, speaking with them regularly, getting updates, and keeping donors informed through our blog. Jill is a teacher and life coach. She is passionate about helping people achieve their greatest potentials. She works with the charities to maintain their connection us and to our donor base. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Damian, and their children.
SYLVIA PATTERSON, Director
Sylvia is the organization’s administrator. She manages the donor side of operations, facilitating community events, responding to inquiries and maintaining S4K’s books and website. She is the go to person for our everyday operations. She has an extensive background in business administration, communications and project management. She lives in Vancouver.
Beyond raising money, we seem to have built a community- of friends first and foremost, and of people who together want to make a difference and have found that that change begins within themselves. People are pushing themselves to be their best selves as they raise this money for Sanctuary for Kids. They are making pilgrimages to work in Nepal. They are donating to causes within their local communities by being inspired by this virtual one. They are sharing their work with others. This both inspiring and gratifying to the four of us.

S4K was founded by Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler, and Jill Bodie through their connection to the ground-breaking Syfy television series Sanctuary the first to use green-screen technology for creating extraordinary visual effects and virtual sets.

What We Do[]

SUPPORTING CHILDREN'S CHARITIES AROUND THE WORLD

The charities which Sanctuary for Kids supports have been very carefully chosen. Part of our selection process includes determining which organizations will benefit significantly from the marketing boost that comes from S4K and our connections. We ensure that 100% of the money donated goes directly to the children and the programs that support them. Through the years, in addition to our four charities, we have supported schools in Haiti, and Ghana, and we have contributed to various crises campaigns through Save the Children.Since its inception in November 2009, S4K has raised over $800,000. We are committed to maintaining our relationships with these organizations and their children.
WATARI VANCOUVER
Work At Home: Watari’s Transitioning To Independence Program(TIP) And The Transitioning To Independence Program For Parenting Youth (TIP2)
Watari created their youth housing program in 2007 to assist vulnerable young people in engaging with their communities by becoming housed in market housing and supported to develop the skills required to maintain this housing. Initially focused on youth struggling with substance use and mental health issues, 20 subsidies and weekly peer based programming became the backbone of the Transitioning to Independence Program (TIP. In 2009 the program added 10 subsidies for pregnant and parenting youth (TIP2) who were homeless. Over the years, the program has housed over 90 young people, 27 children and 11 partners with 82% of these youth still housed after their subsidy access has ended. In addition, 11% have completed college and almost 100% of the families are no longer in need of ministry oversight.

Sanctuary for Kids’ initiative tackles several crucial elements that addresses gaps in service. This approach allows youth to access treatment or family support while maintaining their housing. Sanctuary for Kids provides starter kits to help each individual and family set up their homes. In addition, we also provide a transportation fund. Transportation is a huge barrier for the youth and we are working to make that a non-issue for them. Bus tickets to jobs and training programs, cab fares when necessary- these make a world of difference. Sometimes our funding goes to other barriers to employment such as tools, boots, and training programs. Sometimes these seemingly little things make all the difference for a person to move forward in their lives.
NEPAL ORPHANS HOME
Established in 2005, Nepal Orphans Home attends to the welfare of children in Nepal who are orphaned, abandoned, or not supported by their parents. The foundation currently cares for 150 children in 4 separate homes, each of which are known as Papa’s House. Many of these children have been removed from situations where they had been sold into indentured servitude. The mission of Nepal Orphans Home is not just to rescue children from abject poverty, but to enable the children to develop and realize their potentials.

We continue to primarily support the girls at Gumba House (Sanctuary House) at NOH. Since 2010 we have paid for the lease and food for the 28 girls in this home. In addition, our support covers their education costs. Our relationship with NOH began with a capital donation to help establish a permanent campus for the children. 2015 was an exciting year indeed, allowing NOH to purchase its first property and making good use of this donation. The property has a large home that the boys now occupy and room for the construction of the Chelsea Education and Community Center which will begin soon. S4K contributed early seed money to the center and love how its mission has evolved from teaching the children a variety of trades and technical computer to teaching the wider community. At present 200 women attend classes daily to learn English, Math, Nepali writing and reading, and basic computer skills. In this way, NOH is powerfully helping to transform its small village beyond its own needs.
ASHA NEPAL
Asha Nepal is a UK-registered charity working for the rights of women and girls in Nepal. Asha is the Nepali word for hope. Asha supports, houses and rehabilitates girls and young women who have been victims of sex trafficking, sexual and physical abuse, child labour, and discrimination due to gender, caste and HIV/Aids. Asha provides a community in the form of psycho-social support and counselling, healthcare, legal support, education and training, to help women and girls to become self-sufficient and fully re-integrate into society.

Sanctuary for Kids fully supports the education of 88 children at Asha Nepal, including 19 children in the children’s home in Kathmandu, 15 children in three foster homes, and 54 children that are supported in the community that otherwise would be unable to go to school, and at high risk of domestic labour. Without this support, these children and teenagers would not be able to go to school, and would be left very vulnerable to domestic labour and to trafficking. From very difficult backgrounds, they have been given hope, and a route to independent living.
NEXT GENERATION NEPAL
Next Generation Nepal supports children whose parents have been manipulated into giving their children to traffickers under the false belief that they were being offered full sponsorship and care for a reputable boarding school education. Next Generation Nepal preserves family unity and strengthens communities by reconnecting trafficked children with their parents and culture.

Sanctuary for Kids contributes funds to rebuilding Nepali communities after the earthquake and which provide education and housing to youth as they complete high school. NGN continues to work in one of the worst affected areas of the earthquakes, where people still face homelessness as well as extreme poverty. Fortunately, most schools in the district have been re-built and are providing education and safety for the children in these areas. Current NGN resources are focusing time and efforts on awareness campaigns on the dangers of child trafficking. Through these campaigns and our police check posts interception, we are able to rescue a large number of children who are or would be trafficked.

The Empowerment Program continues to flourish as the youth thrive. NGN has 20 youth who are victims of trafficking and who have been supported for the past 10 years and are now in college, university or technical programs.

Rescues remain a mission priority and S4K aids in these too. Last year NGN conducted 3 rescues which included 70 children. All of these kids have been reunified with their families or are in the re-connection process and hopefully will be able to return home soon.

Promoting Your Event
We ask you to follow a few simple guidelines for promoting your event:

First, your promotional material must always make clear that Sanctuary for Kids is the beneficiary of the money raised at the fundraising event. We are never a sponsor or partner or organizer of the event itself. This is very important and, thus, we ask that you send us all of your promotional material prior to printing or distribution.

Second, use of the Sanctuary for Kids logo also requires our express consent.

Third, you can be as creative as you want in fundraising ideas, but we cannot sanction any merchandise related to ‘branded media’.

Please understand, we are honoured that you would like to give your time and energy to our organization and help us in this way. We are so grateful. Nonetheless, legal considerations prevent us from having you represented (in posters, or programs, or invitations) as “agents” or “representatives” or “co-sponsors” of S4K. This is why we must insist on these clarifications.

Notes[]

  • Inspiration for the creation of the organization stemmed from the outward message of Sanctuary, to be a real-world counterpart to help those-in-need, and the noticeable overwhelming generosity of the fandom of the sci-fi genre.
  • In nine years, the charity raised a total amount of funds over $800,000 USD.
  • The organization's official website is/was: https://Sanctuaryforkids.org.
    • Trivia: After the organization ceased operation in December 2018, its website inevitably underwent shutdown, resulting in all of its information no longer being publically available for viewing. All of the website content displayed above has thus been retrieved through use of an internet archive website called the Wayback Machine, which records and stores snapshots of website pages for historical preservation purposes.
  • Similarly, though not the same, the website domain name Sanctuaryforkids.com is for sale.
    • As of June 17th, 2024, it is currently listed on HugeDomains.com. The price of purchase is $995 USD.[5]
