Notes[]
- Chronology: A total of twelve Sanctuaries have been closed by Helen Magnus in the span of eight months preceding early 2012 (from mid 2011 to early 2012); starting about ~four months after her return to the present timeline at the beginning of Season 4. Of which, Brisbane, Cape Town, Dallas, and Tokyo Sanctuaries were specifically named as having been the latest to close in early 2012 due to Maneuver Delta Epsilon.[1]
- Continuity Error: There are twenty-two locations on the list above of Sanctuary houses known to exist around the world. Twelve were closed, and according to Will Zimmerman, only three remained open: London, New York, and Old City (the Underground Sanctuary too, just that it was unknown to exist at the time). This leaves six Sanctuaries unaccounted for, creating a continuity error.
- Continuity Error: A continuity error regarding the number of Sanctuaries is present in Episode 4x02 - "Uprising". When Will Zimmerman tries to convince Abby Corrigan to help him with the abnormal invasion, he states that he has 'Henrys' in seventeen cities around the world. At the time, this number was correct as only seventeen facilities had been mentioned so far in the show. However, four episodes later in Episode 4x06 - "Homecoming" the eighteenth Sanctuary (Monrovia) is featured, and another three supposedly 'known to exist' Sanctuaries (Brisbane, Cape Town, and Dallas) are mentioned in Episode 4x13 - "Sanctuary for None, Part II", which bumps the total number of surface Sanctuaries up to twenty-one facilities. It is unknown if Will Zimmerman's line of "seventeen Henrys" potentially indicates that not every Sanctuary has its own tech support person; that four locations are without one. However, this is unlikely to be the case as in Episode 2x02 - "End of Nights, Part II" Helen Magnus states that Henry Foss was working with his counterparts at all of the Sanctuaries, refuting Will Zimmerman's number; making it a continuity error.
Closures[]
The closure of multiple Sanctuaries presents an issue in that even just one closure would be too big to hide, especially from the Network's own employees. This is contrary to what the show displays. In Episode 4x11 - "The Depths", Will Zimmerman (Helen Magnus's protégé and the supposed second-in-command of the Sanctuary Network) is clearly unaware that any closures have occurred based on the opening dialogue. In Episode 4x13 - "Sanctuary for None, Part II", Will Zimmerman gets access to SCIU's database monitoring the Sanctuary Network and it's properties and learns about multiple house closures. Will Zimmerman not being in the loop can assumedly be attributed to Richard Feliz creating false reports for him to read, passed along by Helen Magnus herself.
However, what is overlooked / ignored by the writers is that it is highly unlikely that none of the employees at those Sanctuaries would never have made any mention of the closures and or about having been recently separated / unemployed from the Sanctuary Network to any other Sanctuary Network team member. Realistically, Will Zimmerman (as well as Declan MacRae at the London Sanctuary and the unnamed head of the New York Sanctuary - the final three surface Sanctuaries) would have had some sort of communication in the past eight months with members of these closed Sanctuaries. Henry Foss would have also noticed any changes in addresses of shipments / transfers from these closed Sanctuaries to Old City as well.
- Speculation: In order to get around this problem, it indicates that Helen Magnus would have kept some (at the very least the head of house), or all, of those employees and potentially had them sign or agree to an NDA of sorts about their current operations and the location they were based out of. Had they continued to work on the surface, they would have had to have at least one meeting location to drop abnormals off for collection, such as a safe house. It's unlikely that all of these employees would opt (if invited at all) to move and live at the Underground Sanctuary. Considering that the majority of abnormals are located on the surface, just because the local housing facility is closed, it doesn't mean that the need to have locally based staff goes away.[1]
