New Mexico is a state located within the Southwestern region of the United States and one of the Mountain States of the southern Rocky Mountains. By area, it is the fifth-largest U.S. state. For its borders, it shares in the Four Corners region with Utah (to the northwest), Colorado (to the north), and Arizona (to the west), as well as borders with Oklahoma to the northeast, Texas to the east and southeast, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora to the south.[1] A large portion of the southern half of this state is covered by the Chihuahuan Desert.

The Chihuahuan Desert is a desert that spans over a wide portion of the Southwestern region of the United States and across the border down into the country of Mexico.[2] It is referred to non-specifically on Sanctuary as the "New Mexican desert".

Episode 2x03 - "Eulogy":
After suffering the believed loss of her daughter Ashley Magnus, Helen Magnus starts to have old memories resurface. In a flashback set during 1957, Magnus was traversing the New Mexican desert within the Navajo Nation near Albuquerque in search of a 'nonexistent' place called Tehuatonichen. On the passenger seat of her vehicle, a copy of the Albuquerque Daily newspaper is seen.

When Will Zimmerman and Helen Magnus fall victim to a psych worm just outside of Juárez, Mexico (a city just south of the US-Mexico border of El Paso, Texas), they are transported by Kate Freelander and Henry Foss to Virgil St. Pierre's private research facility underneath the New Mexican desert one hundred miles south of Santa Fe.

During the teaser sequence of the episode, SCIU usurps the Captured Abnormal from the Old City Sanctuary team. According to the GPS data Henry Foss reviews from their hidden tracking beacon, the abnormal was airlifted across the U.S.-Canada border to Holloman Air Force Base which is located just outside of the city of Alamogordo. From there, the abnormal was transported to Area 51 located in the middle of the New Mexican desert.
