"Kush" is the fifth episode of the first season of Sanctuary, and the fifth episode overall in the series.
Synopsis[]
Returning with an abnormal captured in the Himalayas, Helen Magnus and Will Zimmerman are stranded from civilization and aid after their plane goes down in a desolate mountain range. While anxiously waiting for a rescue team, the surviving passengers begin to fall victim to vicious and deadly attacks throughout the night. It becomes chillingly apparent that surviving the cold is the least of their worries and no one, not even Magnus and Will, is above suspicion.
Plot[]
Cold Open[]
Helen Magnus dreams of a night in late 19th century London, when she and then-lover John Druitt went out celebrating. Druitt eventually proposed to her in a carriage, much to her surprise. In that moment, Magnus wakes up and finds herself and Will Zimmerman along with some other people in a plane that has crashed on a snowy mountainside somewhere in the Himalayas.

- Trivia: This is, as of Episode 2x04 - "Hero", the only television episode in which Henry Foss does not appear.
- Casting: Ryan Robbins (Henry Foss) does not appear in this episode.
- Geography: The top of Tirich Mir is over 25,000 feet above sea level, and base camps for climbing Tirich Mir are usually at about 15,000 feet. If the crash site was between these two then our main characters were at least three miles up, where walking across the room is serious aerobic exercise.
- Trivia: As Ashley Magnus is looking at a weather display for Tirich Mir in the Hindu Kush, she says an arctic outflow system is moving into the region. Arctic outflows, AKA winter squamish, are very strong, very cold winds coming down off the Western Canadian Coast Mountains into the fjords of British Columbia, where the writers of this series live.
- Trivia / Character Error: (at around 11 minutes) Viktor Braun says that the name, "Hindu Kush", translates to "killer of Hindus" and was given by locals because they believe that the gods made the weather for the purpose of killing men. Translation is correct, but not the explanation. It was actually named so because it was the route that Iranian slave traders used to transport Hindu slaves, captured in India, to Turkmenistan for sale. Many slaves died from exposure because their captors did little to protect them from the cold. Normally, only the foreign slaves died, who were mostly Hindu.
- Reference: In a frozen wasteland an isolated group must identify a deadly creature capable of mimicking any one of the group; the only test for the monster is the innate behavior of its blood. That is the synopsis of this episode and of the 1938 John W. Campbell novella 'Who Goes There?'. 'Who Goes There' is also the source for the movie 'The Thing'.
