MAGNUS:
[voice over] Previously on Sanctuary...
SCENE FROM Episode 2x01 - "End of Nights, Part I"
MAGNUS:
Name?
KATE:
Kate Freelander
KATE:
For the record, I’m not Cabal.
SCENES FROM Episode 2x02 - "End of Nights, Part II"
DANA:
[on phone] Dana Whitcomb.
MAGNUS:
[on phone] You have my daughter, I want her back.
DANA:
Your daughter or your work.
[Magnus throws the cell phone in anger.]
CLARA:
Will!
WILL:
Clara, what are you still doing here? I thought you were going to evacuate with the other residents.
WILL:
She wasn't supposed to be here.
MAGNUS:
Ashley, please...
ASHLEY:
Mom...
[Ashley teleports out in a flash and Magnus is distraught.]

INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS'S STUDY - DAY
[Magnus is walking back to her desk looking at a book when a young looking Druitt enters.]
DRUITT:
Helen?
[Magnus turns towards Druitt.]
DRUITT:
It's a miracle.
[Ashley enters behind Druitt.]
MAGNUS:
Ashley?
ASHLEY:
Mom...
MAGNUS:
Welcome home.
[Magnus is sitting at her desk and awakes suddenly.]
EXT. - CARGO SHIP - DAY
[Will is walking with Li on the ship. There are crates surrounding them.]
LI:
The repairs on the Beijing Sanctuary will be finished in March.
WILL:
And how long before the Moscow and London Sanctuaries are reopened?
LI:
Three months, provided the contractors hold to their estimates. Tokyo, however, is a total loss.
WILL:
Which means we have a lot of dispossessed residents to deal with.
LI:
The Sanctuary Network survived, that's what matters most.
WILL:
It's just...hard to keep that in mind sometimes.
LI:
Yes. Clara. So many tragedies to process.
WILL:
I take it that's our cargo.
LI:
No, ours is in the hold.
WILL:
Okay, well, I’ve got five trucks waiting, so...
LI:
And the rest?
WILL:
Magnus said you requested space for 20 abnormal refugees.
LI:
Not 20 abnormals...20 containers of abnormals. Oh...
[They open the hold of the ship and screeching and roaring is heard. Abnormals can be seen wandering and flying around many crates. One flies up to Will and Li looking down into the hold.]
NAPAEAE:
Whoo-hoo! I can see the light. Hahaha, oh now, that's better. whoo, man, was it hot in there! Boy, I could sure do with a lemonade. Yo Beijing, what's a guy gotta do to get a cold drink around here, huh? Huh? Ooh, you're a lot of help. I'm out of here, see you.
[The napaeae flies away.]
WILL:
We're going to need some more trucks.
Title sequence[]
Act I[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS’S STUDY - DAY
[Magnus places a wooden box on her desk and opens it. She takes out a necklace. A cup of tea is set next to the box by Ashley. Magnus look shocked and shakes her head and looks again to see it is Bigfoot setting the tea cup down.]
MAGNUS:
Stop doting on me. It makes my teeth itch.
BIGFOOT:
Mine too. Now, eat.
[Bigfoot has also placed a tray of food in front of Magnus.]
MAGNUS:
I should be helping Henry and Will.
BIGFOOT:
Oh, they're fine. Everything's running smooth as silk.
[Bigfoot holds out a flower to Magnus. She smiles up at him.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - GROUND FLOOR - INTAKE ROOM - DAY
[Henry and Chuck are corralling an abnormal.]
HENRY:
Oh, no, you don't.
[A crawling abnormal is encouraged in a specific direction by Henry and Chuck.]
HENRY:
Okay...this is a freaking mess.
CHUCK:
[dodging an abnormal’s appendage.] Whoa! So many wonderful guests!
HENRY:
You know, we got to figure out a tagging system or something cause half these things shouldn't even be breathing the same air.
NAPAEAE:
[laughs] Whoo!
HENRY:
Hey!
[The napaeae has taken Henry’s stylus.]
NAPAEAE:
Whoa...Come on, come and get it, shorty!
HENRY:
I'm short?
[Will walks in.]
WILL:
Okay, so all grade four security risks are in the SHU. How's the food and water holding up?
[An abnormal reaches around crate and tries to grab Will.]
WILL:
Whoa!
HENRY:
Hey, down, Smithers. Git...
[Will crashes into a crate and squeaking is heard.]
HENRY:
All right. yeah, I pulled in big favors from our suppliers got, um--
[An abnormal retching causes everyone to yelp.]
WILL:
Whoa...
HENRY:
Yeah, he's-he's not well.
WILL:
Oh, God...I hope the plumbing holds up.
HENRY:
Yeah, it's not the plumbing I'm worried about. Magnus isn't letting me reset the EM shield, it's still set to high security mode. You have any idea what kind of drain that is on our electrical system?
WILL:
Well, I’m sure Magnus is not overly concerned about the utility bill right now.
HENRY:
I know. I'm just saying we can't even plug in a toaster right now without blowing a fuse. I got 15 guests on the upper levels, I got another dozen in trucks waiting for rooms--
WILL:
Henry, Henry, look, I know, okay. Everything's a mess right now, but we can handle it.
HENRY:
Really, well tell that to the 12 guys waiting in the SHU.
WILL:
We can handle it, okay? Let's just give 110 percent and take it one game at a time.
HENRY:
Okay, one game at a time.
WILL:
It's time for you to be the man.
HENRY:
Be the man, look out!
[Will yelps]
HENRY:
Smithers, come on!
WILL:
Would you—could you--
HENRY:
Sorry... about him. All right, be the man. Be the man...
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - GUEST ROOM - DAY
[Kate is loading a gun. She walks over and picks up a pair of bloody jeans.]
KATE:
[chuckling] Hmm...good times.
[There is a knock on the door.]
KATE:
Hey.
[Will looks around the messy room and groans in distaste.]
WILL:
Wow...see, this is why we ask for a cleaning deposit from you when you check in.
KATE:
Ha ha.
WILL:
So you're really going, huh?
KATE:
Well, I can't exactly stay. I mean, the whole attack on this place, me shooting the boss' kid with a rocket, the kid going boom...Things are just too, uh...weird now.
WILL:
Things are usually weird around here, but I agree, they're especially weird right now.
KATE:
Look, I appreciate you guys letting me stay here as long as you have, but you need room at the inn, so--
WILL:
Kate, do you want to stay here?
KATE:
[scoffing] No, why do you ask?
WILL:
Well, you've taken your sweet time leaving. You've obviously made yourself at home. I don’t know.
KATE:
Well, the leg's still a bit stiff. I was planning on waiting until I was in peak condition before shipping out.
WILL:
Whatever, look, if you're leaving, clean the place up, and if you're staying, clean the place up.
KATE:
Yeah, yeah.
WILL:
Garbage pickup's at 4:00.
KATE:
Good to know.
[Kate closes the door behind Will.]
KATE:
"Garbage pickup is at 4:00."
FLASHBACK
EXT. - DESERT - DAY
[A jeep is driving in sand storm. Magnus is driving over the bumpy terrain with the radio playing.]
VOICE ON RADIO:
...season from the 1955 World Series win over the Yankees....
[Magnus grabs a vase to stop it from falling off the seat next to her. The Jeep has 1957 New Mexico license plate.]
VOICE ON RADIO:
...States will become the modern stadium of its time. A deal not only has....
[Magnus turns off the engine and grabs some papers sitting on the seat in front of the vase. A newspaper, Albuquerque Daily, headline reads: Russians Launch Sputnik. Magnus gets out of Jeep and lays out a map on the hood of the Jeep and places a compass on top of it.]
END FLASHBACK
[Bigfoot is heard growling.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS’S STUDY - DAY
[Magnus returns to the present and looks toward the closed door of her office. She can hear Will talking loudly.]
WILL’S VOICE:
Okay, just stop! Stop being an idiot, all right?
WILL’S VOICE:
Are we going to do this now? Are we going to do this now?
[Magnus gets up and moves toward the door. She opens the door to find Will and Bigfoot outside it. It appears as though Bigfoot isn’t allowing Will near the door.]
WILL’S VOICE:
Okay, fine, and don't bare your teeth at me! I know what that means when you do that!
MAGNUS:
Please, Will, come in.
WILL:
We'll discuss this later.
[Bigfoot smacks Will on the back of his head as he passes him to enter Magnus’s office.]
WILL:
God...
MAGNUS:
I know you've had your hands full. And I really appreciate you all giving me some time, but I’m hardly the only one personally affected by recent events. We haven't spoken since Clara's memorial service.
WILL:
Yeah which was five days ago. Magnus, what happened was...the worst thing I could possibly imagine, but it happened. And you mourning Ashley alone is not going to do yourself or anyone else any good all right. Without closure--
MAGNUS:
I know all of that, Will.
WILL:
Then why are you delaying the inevitable? Why are you hiding in here?
MAGNUS:
Simple or complicated version; your choice?
WILL:
What are you doing?
MAGNUS:
I've wanted to tell you exactly that for days, Will, but I had to be sure, and now I am.
WILL:
Of what?
MAGNUS:
I'm not mourning anything, not yet. Because I believe there's a very real chance that Ashley may still be alive.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - GROUND LEVEL - DAY
[Henry and Li are carrying a large crate into the room. Kate is watching them enter.]
KATE:
Is that a real, live stenopelhabilis?
HENRY:
Not so much alive as dead. These two were the last of their kind. They bought when London was hit.
KATE:
I didn't even know there was any left in existence.
LI:
There are many species under our care. We prefer people to believe they are extinct.
KATE:
No way, you had a male and a female?
LI:
We were trying to breed them.
HENRY:
Dr. Magnus wanted them brought here for study and safekeeping.
[Kate reaching in crate and Henry grabs her arm.]
KATE:
What?
HENRY:
Well, you don't think I know about the tusks? That's all you see, isn't it?
KATE:
Dude, do you know how much those are worth on the European market alone? And I’m talking for each pair. Forget about Asia, that'd be, like, double the--
LI:
Who are you?
HENRY:
Ark-Fong Li, head of the Beijing Sanctuary, meet Kate Freelander, professional pain in the ass, Who I believe was just leaving.
KATE:
I was, but Will asked me to stay a little longer and help out with all the newbies and stuff. Garbage detail, my idea. See ya.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS’S STUDY - DAY
WILL:
How could she have survived? And believe me; I say this wanting her to be somewhere, anywhere, alive and well.
MAGNUS:
Which could very well be the case. The first attacker teleported at 18:25 hours.
[Magnus walks over to her desk and hit a button on the computer.]
MAGNUS:
Notice the change in the EM field's strength? The second attempted teleport happened less than three minutes later.
WILL:
Further destabilizing the field.
MAGNUS:
Exactly.
WILL:
So you're saying the EM field was unstable when--
MAGNUS:
Ashley teleported at 18:29 hours.
WILL:
You think she got through?
MAGNUS:
A further analysis needs to be done to determine exactly where she could have landed. I need you to be my emotional compass. We nearly lost the entire Sanctuary Network because of my judgment. I need to know that my instincts aren't wrong. That my feelings don't end up blinding my decisions.
EXT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - ESTABLISHING SHOT - NIGHT
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - STASIS ROOM
[Door opens quietly and Kate enters with a flashlight. It is the room with the stenopelhabilis crates. She goes to the computer and presses some buttons to open one of the crates.]
KATE:
Heck, yeah.
[Kate leaves computer and misses the warning message “Life Form Detected. She goes to the stenopelhabilis and admires the tusk.]
KATE:
Come to mama.
[Fluid comes flying out and covers Kate who backs away.]
KATE:
Oh! Okay, I’m going to gag.
[A creature grunting can be heard. Kate looks in crate and then around on the floor. A small abnormal is on the floor near more fluid.]
KATE:
I'll be damned...love child of the dead.
[Kate crawls toward the baby steno.]
KATE:
Shh...hey...come to mama.
[Kate reaches for it and it licks her.]
KATE:
Oh, you little—
[The baby steno runs off.]
KATE:
Oh, crap, fabulous.
Act II[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - MAIN LAB
[Bigfoot and Henry are walking through a room full of crates.]
HENRY:
If we move the Kitapholus drocena here, we could put the seroslugs on the third floor by the lotus elks.
BIGFOOT:
No, lotus elk eat seroslug What about the cryo-lab?
HENRY:
Uh, that's the only room that goes to minus 30 degrees. I was hoping to save that for the northern halcylops.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - HENRY'S ARRAY
HENRY:
Ah, what about the pradophili?
BIGFOOT:
Ooh, pradophili!
HENRY:
Yeah, okay.
[Henry and Bigfoot enter Henry’s array. The Napaeae flies in.]
NAPAEAE:
Hey! Ape man...and short human guy, I ordered Thai food, like, an hour ago. What, are you clowns on strike, or what?
HENRY:
Look, annoying insect guy, you'll eat when it's your turn to eat.
NAPAEAE:
Oh, wait a minute, you hate me because I got wings, don't you? Because I have the freedom of flight and you don't!
HENRY:
Yeah, that's why I hate you. Now go back to your shoebox and let us work, please.
[Henry is eating a candy bar and sets a part of it down on the desk.]
NAPAEAE:
Whoa hey you going to eat that cause I can make a serious smorgasbord out of that.]
HENRY:
Hey listen; will you go away if I give it to you?
[Napaeae picks up cookie]
NAPAEAE:
Whoa, holy jeez! The density of these things, I can feel my deltoids.
[Napaeae flies out of room but almost flies into Kate who is entering room.]
KATE:
Oh...
NAPAEAE:
Hey, sweet cheeks, my room, now!
KATE:
You wish. Hey...
HENRY:
What happened to you?
KATE:
Oh, yeah. Well, it seems like the dead female steno was still able to carry a healthy baby, and, mazel tov, she had one.
HENRY:
That's great! We should put it in an incubator or something.
KATE:
Slight problem, it got away.
HENRY:
Say again?
KATE:
Hey, I tried to stop it, but the little bugger tried to eat me.
BIGFOOT:
They were all in stasis.
KATE:
Mom was in stasis; Junior, as it turns out, not so much.
HENRY:
This is not good. This is not good. We have to find it before it gets eaten by something, or vice versa.
[Henry pick up some equipment and rushes out. Kate moves to follow him but Bigfoot grabs the back of her shirt.]
BIGFOOT:
What were you doing down there?
KATE:
That is a very...astute question.
BIGFOOT:
Perhaps you'd like to sell me too?
KATE:
Maybe.
EXT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - ESTABLISHING SHOT - DAY
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - GUEST ROOM - DAY
[Doctor Li stops in doorway.]
LI:
Baby stenopelhabilis. How in the world? Oh, that's nasty food. No, no, no, no, no, not good for you at all. Here, now. Here, just let me--
[Steno snarls, Li yelps and speaks in Mandarin. He has lacerations on his hand.]
EXT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - SANCTUARY GROUNDS - DAY
MAGNUS:
I know that look. Just spill it.
WILL:
What do you think happens after we die? You've seen more lives end than anyone else that I know.
MAGNUS:
Kurt and Albert and I got into this discussion once at a Princeton football game, I think it was 1953. Albert argued that the concept of matter equaling energy, and vice versa, was far more ubiquitous than any of us could have imagined.
WILL:
That would be Kurt Gödel and Albert Einstein?
[Magnus nods affirmative.]
WILL:
Of course, look, I’m a guy hammering in stakes here you want to have a little mercy?
MAGNUS:
What do I think death is?
WILL:
Yeah.
MAGNUS:
Did you ever see "Field of Dreams"?
WILL:
Yeah, I loved that movie.
MAGNUS:
The cornfield, it's rather like that.
WILL:
I never understood what happened in the cornfield.
MAGNUS:
Nobody did, that was the point.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS'S STUDY - DAY
[Magnus enters her office reading a book.]
DRUITT:
Helen...you're missing out on all the fun.
MAGNUS:
There's food if you're hungry. Dr. Li can patch you up if you're injured, I haven't the time.
[Magnus continues to her desk. Druitt is sitting in chair across the room drinking liquor. He has blood on his neck.]
DRUITT:
I wonder why. You'll be pleased to know Nikola and I are making significant headway into the Cabal's operations. Individual cells exist, but the central brain trust has...been undone.
MAGNUS:
You're killing them off.
DRUITT:
Well, they exist only as desperate, disconnected camps now.
MAGNUS:
And Dana Whitcomb?
[Magnus walks to front of desk and stands.]
DRUITT:
A fugitive, but it's only a matter of time. She will answer for what she's done.
MAGNUS:
With her life, will that help? Oh...
[Magnus holds up her hand.]
MAGNUS:
On second thought, don't answer that.
DRUITT:
Perhaps once I’ve found her, I'll simply hand her over to the authorities? I don't need your blessing!
[Druitt gets out of chair and walks to stand in front of Magnus.]
DRUITT:
And there is a part of you that's dying for the moment I come and tell you it's done.
MAGNUS:
I'm choosing to focus on other things, John, like rebuilding.
DRUITT:
Then plan Ashley’s funeral.
MAGNUS:
Not yet. Not until I say.
DRUITT:
In this delusional little game you're playing--
MAGNUS:
There is a chance--
DRUITT:
Is there really?
MAGNUS:
Yes!
DRUITT:
You may have been able to convince these others to follow you down this perverse rabbit hole, but I will not! They took her from us in the most unnatural way possible! I'm doing my part. Do yours.
[Druitt moves away and Magnus hold the necklace around her neck.]
FLASHBACK
[Magnus is driving the Jeep and the visibility is poor due to the wind blowing the sand. Magnus stops when she sees a woman standing in front of the Jeep. The woman comes to stand next to the door. Startled, Magnus rolls down the window.]
NAVAJO WOMAN:
Gas station's five miles back.
MAGNUS:
Actually, I’m trying to find Tehuatonichen. My information says it's in this area. Am I close?
NAVAJO WOMAN:
Ain't nothin' round here but desert.
[The old woman is wearing the necklace that Magnus had on.]
END FLASHBACK
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - HALLWAY - DAY
[Henry, Li and Bigfoot are walking down hallway.]
HENRY:
We'll track the steno, and we'll bag it with snares, or if we have to, we'll use a shock web.
LI:
No, definitely not, and please, gently with the snares. We don't want to hurt it.
[Kate walks out of one of the rooms into the hallway.]
KATE:
Whoa, whoa, whoa! dude...snares? It's a steno. I say you set the phasers to 11 and fry the sucker. hmm?
LI:
It was defending itself, most likely from being sold on the black market by you.
[Bigfoot snarls menacingly.]
BIGFOOT:
We need some bait.
LI:
We were feeding its parents bamboo leaves and shoots--
KATE:
Or my day-old hamburger...
HENRY:
Shush.
LI:
As I was saying, we have several rare genera of bamboo from the southern Yangtze region which I’m sure it will find very delicious.
HENRY:
Let's just get this thing back in a cage before it gets eaten by something hungrier and bigger.
[The others move down the hallway leaving Kate behind.]
KATE:
I'm telling you, burgers!
HENRY:
Thanks for the tip.
KATE:
And the whole the snare thing, big mistake!
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS'S STUDY - DAY
ASHLEY:
I can't see anything here.
[Ashley is holding the laptop down for Magnus to see. Magnus stares up at her. She jumps and it’s not Ashley but Will.]
WILL:
There's no evidence in the bio-scanner of Ashley escaping the EM field perimeter.
MAGNUS:
I've been looking at this from the wrong point of view. I thought the de-stabilization in the field meant that she might've gotten through it.
WILL:
What else could it mean?
MAGNUS:
Well, that she simply bounced back within the field itself, re-materialized somewhere inside the Sanctuary. Think about it, Will. Why did the field weaken at the exact moment that she teleported?
WILL:
An anomaly? A power surge because she was taking one of the super abnormals with her at the time?
MAGNUS:
You're reaching. All we need to do is search for elements of Ashley’s DNA inside the Sanctuary.
WILL:
No, no, no, you're reaching. We have had a work crew in the Sanctuary for a week, and no one has found anything that could be possibly be construed as a body.
[Will crotches down to be eye level to Magnus.]
MAGNUS:
But they haven't been everywhere.
[Magnus voices becomes shaky as she becomes tearful.]
MAGNUS:
She could be disoriented...or hurt.
WILL:
Or gone.
MAGNUS:
Do you really want me to stop?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY
BIGFOOT:
Ground floor, lower level secured.
[Bigfoot is talking over the walkie to the other who are in different parts of the Sanctuary. They are all carrying snares. Kate is with Henry on the lower levels.]
HENRY:
Okay, good. Dr. Li?
LI:
No sign yet.
BIGFOOT:
Perhaps it's sleeping somewhere.
LI:
They only sleep at night. It will definitely be awake.
HENRY:
Everybody stay in touch.
LI:
Wait, wait, wait. I have him.
[The steno is eating a hamburger.]
HENRY:
Can you get it?
[Li beckons by whistling and clucking]
LI:
All right. all right...
[Li tries to capture it with the snare but misses and the steno dashes off.]
LI:
On the move, going for the lower levels.
HENRY:
Hey, Big Guy, it's headed your way!
BIGFOOT:
Ready.
[Bigfoot grunts softly]
BIGFOOT:
Got you, you little—Oh...
[Bigfoot manages to get the snare around the head but isn’t able to tighten it in time and it gets free. Henry, Kate and Li come rushing in.]
HENRY:
Hey, what happened?
BIGFOOT:
Oh, it jumped.
LI:
It can't jump. Stenos don't do that.
BIGFOOT:
This one did.
HENRY:
Oh, damn it, it's in the vent system.
LI:
Can't you just trap it in there?
HENRY:
Not fast enough. This is very bad.
EXT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - DAY
[A vent covering has a whole in it.]
HENRY:
Oh, great. It's gone.
KATE:
Well, you clearly don't need my help.
Act III[]
EXT. - OLD CITY - ESTABLISHING SHOT - DAY
EXT. - OLD CITY - DAY
[Henry is getting in a van. Kate is already seated in the passenger seat with a drink.]
HENRY:
This is a disaster.
KATE:
The Titanic's a disaster, Madonna's movie career, disaster. This is nothing.
HENRY:
You don't get it, do you? I'm supposed to be the man, and losing a one-of-a-kind baby steno does not exactly make me "the man".
KATE:
Quite a predicament, if only you had the services of a world-class hunter/tracker at your disposal.
HENRY:
Name your price.
KATE:
Never say that to me unless you mean it.
HENRY:
I'm saying it.
KATE:
Mommy and daddy's tusks.
HENRY:
No, no, no way.
KATE:
The bamboo salesman and the giant walking rug are running the Sanctuary and I’m right here, healthy, willing and able.
[slurps noisily]
KATE:
Come on, Henry, do you want to be the man or not?
HENRY:
One steno tusk one.
KATE:
Two sets of two or it's not worth it.
HENRY:
One set--
KATE:
The female.
HENRY:
Fine.
KATE:
Let's roll!
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAGNUS'S STUDY - DAY
MAGNUS:
Once the scan is complete, any biological artifacts matching Ashley’s DNA should show up.
WILL:
If we do find something, how do we know that it's not from one of the super abnormals that attacked us? Didn't they share Ashley's DNA?
MAGNUS:
I'm hopeful that there are ways to tell the difference. Either way, we should have a good idea of what really happened.
[Will sighs heavily]
WILL:
I can't tell if this is a real investigation or a train wreck.
[Magnus turns suddenly and Will realizes what he’s said.]
WILL:
Oh, look, I-I’m sorry, I didn't--
MAGNUS:
No, no. Never stop doing that, being honest with me. Anything else and I will be insulted. Thanks.
WILL:
Sancho Panza had it easy.
MAGNUS:
Ashley and I always had to face tragedy and loss in our work. I taught her a saying--"nos must amitto vivo en."
WILL:
We must let go to live on.
MAGNUS:
Well done, Sancho. You know, she always faced death better than me, among many things.
WILL:
That must've been hard, just you and her.
MAGNUS:
It was worth every minute.
EXT. - OLD CITY - ESTABLISHING SHOT - WATER TOWER - NIGHT
EXT. - OLD CITY
[Bigfoot’s voice] There has been an incident at Vera’s Burger Shack on Salisbury.
[Medics are wheeling someone out of Vera’s as Henry and Kate walk up.]
HENRY:
Just let me handle the cops, okay?
POLICEMAN:
Can I help you folks?
KATE:
Health Department, we got a call about a code violation.
POLICEMAN:
Okay, go ahead.
HENRY:
Health Department?
[Henry and Kate enter building.]
KATE:
No one ever checks. So, what did I tell ya? Burgers.
HENRY:
Okay, shush.
KATE:
It happened only 20 minutes ago. It couldn't have gotten far.
HENRY:
Especially if it just ate.
KATE:
Is it just me, or has its shoe size gone up?
HENRY:
We're going to need a bigger cage.
[Henry and Kate walk back out to the street.]
KATE:
Just chowed down, been on the run for a while. If I was a full, tired critter, I'd want a place to lay low for a bit.
HENRY:
Make a nest.
KATE:
I'm thinkin' yeah.
HENRY:
Yeah.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAGNUS'S STUDY - NIGHT
[Will sets a sandwich in front of Magnus.]
WILL:
Made it myself.
MAGNUS:
I'm not hungry, thank you.
WILL:
Okay.
MAGNUS:
Will, would you please stop hovering? I can take care of myself.
[Magnus gets up and goes to the computers at another desk.]
WILL:
You've barely eaten for six days. You've had hardly any sleep. Even for you, this is extreme.
MAGNUS:
I'm fine.
WILL:
Yes and no.
WILL:
You've got a clear mind, good focus, but you also, you know...you drift off now and again. You leave.
MAGNUS:
It's just memories.
[Will sighs]
WILL:
If this bio-scan comes up empty…
MAGNUS:
What theory will I cook up next to keep this quest alive?
WILL:
No, I wasn't saying that.
MAGNUS:
Yes, you were.
[Will crotches down next to Magnus.]
WILL:
I need to know, are you searching for closure...or a miracle?
MAGNUS:
There are no such things as miracles.
[The computer beeps.]
MAGNUS:
It's found something.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL
WILL:
Okay, the coordinates say it should be right...
MAGNUS:
There.
WILL:
Oh, my God.
[A skeleton is stuck in the cement wall.]
Act IV[]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL
[Bigfoot has joined Magnus and Will near the skeleton.]
MAGNUS:
Once you get it free, bring it to the lab. I'll run a full autopsy.
WILL:
I'll meet you there.
[Magnus leaves.]
WILL:
Big Guy, if you want me to do this--
BIGFOOT:
No.
[Bigfoot starts to chip away the cement around the skeleton.]
EXT. - STREET OVER MANHOLE
[Henry pulls the cover off the manhole.]
KATE:
Oh!
HENRY:
Wow.
KATE:
Ok, ok I draw the line.
HENRY:
Come on. Big kudos to the consultant, you were right about it trying to find a place to lay low.
KATE:
That's a sewer down there.
HENRY:
Yeah. City worker gets attacked in the sewer, we go into the sewers.
KATE:
And the stink that never comes out of your clothes? Are we ignoring the need for new wardrobe?
HENRY:
Get in the hole.
KATE:
Okay, but not with this.
[Kate puts down the stunner gun and loads a bullet into the chamber of her gun.]
HENRY:
No, no, come on. Get with the program, please.
KATE:
Hank, reality check, this thing just sent a fry cook and a sewer worker to the emergency room with lacerations. It's obviously way nastier than it was this morning.
HENRY:
You want the tusks or not?
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAIN LAB
[Magnus is looking over the remains as Will walks in.]
WILL:
Anything?
MAGNUS:
The remains are too burnt to determine a fingerprint pattern. What about you?
WILL:
X-rays we were able to recover. Tissue analysis and bone density results will take a little more time.
[Will hands her the tablet with x-ray of a femur on it.]
MAGNUS:
This isn't Ashley.
WILL:
How can you tell?
MAGNUS:
Ashley broke her right femur when she was 12 years old. This one shows no evidence of re-calcification. These are the remains of one of the other super abnormals that attacked us.
[Will sighs]
WILL:
Okay, well, it's something. Look, I I know you were hoping for something else, but--
[Magnus has become lost in thought.]
WILL:
--Hey!
MAGNUS:
I'm feeling quite tired, Will. I think I’ll lie down for a while.
INT. - SEWER
HENRY:
These fries look almost fresh. It's got to be close.
KATE:
Once we do bag it, breaking it from its junk food habit is going to be a bitch.
HENRY:
All right, these tunnels rejoin a couple blocks south of here, so you take left, I'll go right. We'll flush it out into the open on the other side.
KATE:
Sounds like a plan.
HENRY:
Keep in touch, and remember—
KATE:
Stun, no gun, I got it.
HENRY:
Yeah great.
[Kate moves off down the tunnel. A large steno can be heard in the distance. Kate puts the stunner away and gets her gun.]
KATE:
Policy-schmolicy.
FLASHBACK
EXT. - DESERT
[Magnus is looking through binocular next to the Jeep. A young Navajo boy is behind her. She turns around.]
MAGNUS:
Hello.
NAVAJO BOY:
What are you looking for?
MAGNUS:
A place that doesn't exist apparently.
NAVAJO BOY:
Tehuatonichen.
MAGNUS:
Yes.
NAVAJO BOY:
You're right, it doesn't exist.
MAGNUS:
And yet you've heard of it.
END FLASHBACK
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAGNUS'S STUDY
[Magnus awakes on the couch. She gets up and leaves]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAGNUS'S STUDY
MAGNUS:
Einstein was right; matter into energy.
WILL:
Right but landing where?
MAGNUS:
The EM field itself. That’s what the fluctuation means. That’s why I keep seeing…
[Magnus stops when she realizes what she has admitted. She tries to ignore the mistake and move on.]
MAGNUS:
The magnitude and amplitude of the field increased at the time of her jump. EM fields absorb energy. She could be somewhere in the EM field's buffer, trapped mid-teleport.
WILL:
In the computer?
MAGNUS:
Exactly.
WILL:
That's insane.
MAGNUS:
Ashley teleported with another super abnormal. The fluctuation could be the EM field's buffer capturing both signatures and storing them--
WILL:
Okay. Okay, even if she is in here, somehow, what are you going to do? You're going try to communicate with her? You going to try to pull her out somehow?
MAGNUS:
If we could recreate her signature effectively, there may be a way to-to...
WILL:
To what?
MAGNUS:
There are so many variables to consider, Will, so many pieces to this puzzle.
WILL:
Oh, Magnus...
MAGNUS:
One more test. I run an exponential wave analysis. I search the EM field for her particular--
WILL:
Magnus!
[Magnus jumps and falls silent. Will moves closer and leans on desk and sighs.]
WILL:
Okay, okay. What next?
INT. - SEWER TUNNEL
[Kate is walking slowly down tunnel. Noises from the abnormal are getting stronger as it grows closer.]
KATE:
Come on, Junior...
[Kate hears snarling above her and looks up. The steno is above her.]
Act V[]
[The steno drops to the ground and knocks Kate’s gun away in the process.]
KATE:
Easy, now...let's take this nice and slow.
[The steno snarls and moves closer to her.]
KATE:
Do you want a piece of me, boy? Huh? Do you? You're a boy, right?
[Kate wraps her coat around her arm and holds it up for protection. The steno leaps forward and bites Kate’s arm which is wrapped in the coat. It tugs on the coat and Kate falls back as she loses her grip on the coat.]
KATE:
Ah!
[Gunfire is heard and the steno yelps and runs off. Henry has come up behind Kate. Kate grabs her gun.]
KATE:
So, it's bigger.
HENRY:
Yeah
[The steno roars.]
HENRY:
Move! move, move!
KATE:
I thought you said no guns!
HENRY:
I said no guns for you.
[Kate and Henry fall in a hole in their haste to get away.]
HENRY:
Oof! Ow.
KATE:
Get off of me. Where the hell are we?
HENRY:
Uh, I don't know. Looks like your room.
KATE:
Hey...these are my jeans.
HENRY:
Oh, man.
KATE:
What?
HENRY:
I think we found its nest.
[The steno snarls.]
KATE:
Okay, we got to get out of here.
[Kate pulls herself up to look out the top of the hole.]
HENRY:
Why didn't it kill you in the tunnel back there?
[She sees the steno moving down the tunnel toward them.]
KATE:
Henry, its coming!
HENRY:
Yeah, I know just hold on a sec!
KATE:
I'm going to empty a mag into it!
HENRY:
No, you are not!
KATE:
Oh, yeah, I am!
HENRY:
Food, water, shelter...oh, Kate, wait!
KATE:
Henry!
HENRY:
No, no, no!
[Kate fires her gun repeatedly and falls back into the hole. The steno falls on ground near Kate and the stands over her. It begins to lick her.]
KATE:
Ahhhh!
[The steno continues to stand over Kate and wags it’s tail moving playfully.]
[Henry laughs.]
KATE:
What the hell?
[Henry is still giggling but tries to stop so he can talk.]
HENRY:
Look around you. What's the first thing it did? It licked your face, ate your food, stole your clothes. You were the first thing it saw. It thinks you're its mother.
[Henry laughs]
HENRY:
I think it has your eyes.
[Henry is still laughing]
KATE:
Oh, barf. Get off.
FLASHBACK
EXT. - DESERT - NIGHT
[Magnus walks away from Jeep carrying vase toward group of Navajo people.]
MAGNUS:
I came to return this to you. It was given to me in the Amazon.
[Magnus hands the vase to a elder man who examines the outside markings on it.]
NAVAJO MAN:
He was Sani, our last living shaman, spirit leader of our tribe.
MAGNUS:
I was asked to bring him home.
NAVAJO MAN:
For 300 years we've been waiting for his return. This means my ancestors will be at peace.
[The elder woman, from before, steps forward and holds out the necklace to Magnus.]
NAVAJO MAN:
We want you to have this. It was meant for you. May it guide you through dark places and into the light.
END FLASHBACK
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - MAGNUS'S STUDY
[Magnus is sitting in front of the fire looking at the necklace. Will is sitting in front of the computer when it beeps. He turns to Magnus.]
WILL:
You should see this.
[Magnus walks over and reads the screen. “ANALYSIS COMPLETE:
No sign of requested energy signature within electromagnetic field.”
WILL:
I'm truly sorry, Magnus.
MAGNUS:
Tell everyone the memorial service will be tomorrow. I need to reset the EM field.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - GROUND LEVEL - INTAKE AREA - DAY
[The steno is in a cage and Bigfoot, Henry, Li, and Kate are standing in front of it.]
KATE:
There's your rare baby, Dr. Li, Intact and everything.
LI:
Ahem, you've traumatized it. It keeps showing its teeth.
KATE:
To you, not to me. You're just jealous because Ralphie chose me for its mother.
LI:
You don't even know what gender it is.
KATE:
Does it really matter?
[Li says something in another language and walks off.]
BIGFOOT:
Ral-fee...It's got a--a ring to it.
[Bigfoot smacks Kate’s head.]
KATE:
Ow!
HENRY:
You're growing on him.
[Kate rubs her head.]
HENRY:
Feels good, doesn't it? Being a good guy?
KATE:
Meh.
HENRY:
I got to admit, you're pretty good at this.
KATE:
Back at ya, Hank.
HENRY:
So, stick around?
KATE:
Well, I got to get paid, don't I?
HENRY:
Right, well, a deal's a deal. One steno set. Have fun in Maui.
KATE:
Tell you what, hang onto them for me. I'll collect them later. See you, baby.
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - MAGNUS'S STUDY - DAY
[Magnus walks into her office to see Druitt standing waiting for her.]
DRUITT:
I see you've come to your senses.
MAGNUS:
Interesting turn of phrase, all my senses tell me that she's still alive, somewhere--
DRUITT:
Stop. Please.
MAGNUS:
In the end, what she chose to do she did as Ashley, not what they turned her into.
DRUITT:
Yes.
MAGNUS:
Please take some solace in that.
DRUITT:
I think not.
MAGNUS:
Are you joining us?
DRUITT:
You may have found closure, I haven't. Not yet.
[Druitt brushes by Magnus and leaves.]
MAGNUS:
John...
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - CHAPEL - DAY
[A opened casket is displayed and Henry, Will, Bigfoot and Magnus stand in front of it. Bigfoot steps forward when Magnus nods and places a doll into the coffin. Bigfoot moves back and Henry places a notepad in. When he steps back Will moves forward holding a single red rose.]
EXT. - PARIS - CAFÉ - DAY
[Dana Whitcomb is sitting at an outdoor café enjoying her coffee.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - CHAPEL - DAY
[Will places the rose in the casket and returns to stand with the others.
EXT. - PARIS - CAFÉ - DAY
[Dana gets up and leaves the café. Druitt is sitting a few tables away and puts down the paper he is holding up, grabs his cane and moves to follow her.]
INT. - OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - CHAPEL - DAY
[The team has left allowing Magnus some time alone. Magnus moves forward and places the necklace into the coffin. She closes the coffin in tears.]
ASHLEY:
Nos must amitto vivo en. We must let go.
[Magnus turns to see Ashley standing behind her.]
MAGNUS:
I can't.
ASHLEY:
You have to, Mom.
MAGNUS:
But you're...you're my life. Without you--
ASHLEY:
You'll never be without me, and I know that you will always love me. No matter what.
[Ashley has walked forward to stand in front of her mother but then turns away to leave after she finishes talking.]
MAGNUS:
Ashley!
MAGNUS:
[whispering] please...
MAGNUS:
I'm so sorry.
